Bahamas Central Bank to Launch Pilot Digital Currency

The story:

The Central Bank of the Bahamas is planning to introduce a government-backed pilot digital currency, Jamaica Observer reported.

Details:

Speaking at the Bahamas Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Bahamas, K Peter Turnquest, made the announcement, saying that the development of a fully digital payment service is “the way forward for this era of governance.”

Turnquest also advocated for applying blockchain on a nationwide level in order to transform the island of Grand Bahama into the “digital paradise of the region.” He reportedly expects the government to launch a pilot program of issuing blockchain-based education certificates for graduates of the National Training Agency, as well as inspect the ways blockchain can be applied for business licences, passports, and national insurance.

Stanford Univ. Launches Blockchain Research Center, Supported by Ethereum Foundation

The story:

Stanford has created the Center for Blockchain Research, supported in part by the Ethereum Foundation, Stanford Engineering’s website.

Details:

The university reportedly established the center in order to examine how blockchain technology can transform traditional business interactions, according to their official announcement.

Ethereum (ETH) co-founder Vitalik Buterin confirmed his Foundation’s support for the blockchain initiative on Twitter.

In addition to the Ethereum Foundation, the Center for Blockchain Research has received contributions from Protocol Labs, the Interchain Foundation, crypto exchange OmiseGO, DFINITY Stiftung and PolyChain Capital.

The preliminary five-year research program will be led by professors of computer science Dan Boneh and David Mazières, and will include other Stanford professors of engineering, particle physics, and law. Beyond blockchain research, the initiative will also develop courses on blockchain implementation, from its potential role in the financial sector to data management in other spheres.

Why it is important:

The research center at one of the best universities in the world has an opportunity to train a new generation of specialists in this field who will later be able to influence the development of technology, reveal its potential and present unexpected aspects of the use of blockchain to the world.

Samsung Marries Blockchain, AI in Cello 3.0 Logistics Platform

The story:

South Korea electronics giant Samsung revealed a further blockchain implementation in an official announcement on June 20th, they will use the technology in a new logistics platform.

Details:

The platform, dubbed Cello 3.0, is the brainchild of Samsung’s IT subsidiary Samsung SDS, which will use artificial intelligence (AI) and its “logistics knowhow” to deliver it, a press release states.

“We will provide services to global e-commerce sellers with CelloSquare 3.0, which combines cutting-edge IT with Samsung SDS global logistics operation experience,” Kim Hyung-tae, vice president of the logistics business division of Samsung SDS commented.

“By applying a blockchain technology that cannot be modified or stolen, it will prove the international cargo’s origin and increase the reliability of the product,” the Cello release meanwhile explains, SDS adding it also expected similar time and cost-saving benefits.

The release schedule for Cello meanwhile remains unknown.

The introduction of blockchain technology in logistics is one of the most trendy yet important areas in modern developments. Participation of Samsung, a well-known and successful company in this industry, will increase the level of circulation of the blockchain as a whole and its recognition around the world.
